Twitter is suspending the accounts of two prominent conservative media figures for promoting content promoting President Donald Trump.
The suspension is effective immediately, according to the social media company.
Twitter is the largest online platform in the world and accounts like @POTUS, @RealDonaldTrump, @WhiteHouse and @realDonaldTrump.com are used to promote the president’s political views and messaging, which include frequent and virulent attacks on the media.
“The decision to suspend the accounts represents an unprecedented and disproportionate response to a threat to the free speech and robust public discourse that we all cherish,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in a statement.
Trump has been tweeting frequently and harshly on Twitter since the inauguration, sometimes to his own followers, which has drawn criticism from media groups.
Twitter suspended a Twitter account that promoted an anti-Trump “Pocahontas” tweet in March after Trump tweeted about the tweet.
The account was later reinstated.
The tweets were later taken down after Twitter officials learned that the tweets were about an anti-“Pocainas” story that originated in a fake news website.
